Mostly mixed, but a poor argument for the GOP
Whenever confronted by the facts of our recession history, the GOP bobbleheads always try to deflect the subject to Congress. Problem is it just doesn’t hold true. W had a republican Senate his entire time in office and a republican House for 6 of his 8 years, and he screwed the country up as bad as it could have been screwed up. Those bobbleheads also try to give the GOP Congress the credit for our economic prosperity under Clinton. Question then becomes if that’s true, why did our economy go in the toilet under W with that same GOP Congressional control? Reagan had a republican Senate and put us in a recession. JFK & LBJ both had democratic Senates and Houses and kept us out of recession. Nixon gets elected and we go into one.
It’s just a weak argument, and typical of GOP scare tactics. For example, when Obama was running in 2008, all you heard from the GOP was “double-dip recession”. And I mean that’s ALL you heard. Well, here we are in 2016 and the double-dip recession never happened.
Fact is that, with some notable exceptions, we have generally had better economy’s with Democratic Congresses. But the correlation isn’t as strong relating recession to Congress as it is for President. It’s just a weak argument.
