'98 Super Bowl...
Same situation, Green Bay let Terrell Davis score his 3rd TD to keep Denver from bleeding the clock. It was sort of controversial for a few minutes after the game, bc it goes against macho football creed. But pretty quickly everybody figured out that it was the only thing that gave GB a chance to win. What helped was the fact a Super Bowl winning staff (defending champs) going for 2 straight were the ones doing it. After that, it became a well known last ditch effort strategy.
It's actually a take-your-destiny-in-your-own hands approach. You can sit back and passively hope the guy misses a chip shot. Or you can go down swinging with the ball in your possession.
And for anybody thinking "block", remember we're talking very close chip shot, high arc... can't block those.
But you're dead on about Richt and "the book". Not sure he was even capable of that kind of outside the box thinking.
