I looked at SEC Championships during that time, National Championships, Going to bowls games, but especially the big bowl games (Rose Sugar, etc.) and Top 10 finishes.

On SEC titles Georgia had 12. LSU and Tennessee had 10 each.

National Championships are a little tougher. LSU has 4 mostly undisputed NC's (2003 with Southern Cal would be the only dispute). Florida has 3 undisputed. Auburn has one undisputed and one split (Ohio State in 1957. Auburn was unbeaten and 10-0. Ohio State had a tie and went 8-01 in the regular season).

I gave Tennessee 2 legitimate claims to a NC during this stretch. 1998 and your pick of 1950 or 1951. If there had been polls after the bowl games in those years, Tennessee would have probably won it in 1950, but not in 1951.

What to do with Ole Miss? The Rebels went 10-0-1 in 1960. Minnesota was the AP and UPI champ at 8-1 plus a loss in the Rose Bowl. No polls after the bowls. Also, Ole Miss had the typical Southern prejudice against them plus you can add in lack of poll support because of the racial issues in Mississippi at the time. In 1963 Ole Miss went undefeated and lost out to an also undefeated Southern Cal team. Ole Miss played a tougher schedule, but they weren't overcoming James Meredith and the "glamour" of SC. I gave them 1 1/2 to 2 NC's

Georgia won in 1980. A lot of people include 1946 as a NC. The Bulldogs were the only undefeated and untied team in the land, but there was no way that they were going to top Notre Dame in the polls. I give Georgia 1 and 3/4 to 2 for NC' s during this time.

Georgia was more consistent in the top 10 finishes, 5 ahead of the next best, LSU.
