Not overwhelming, but should be a solid coach. Alabama's secondary definitely improved in his only year with them.
It's difficult to know how to weigh his NFL career. On one hand, he was a DC for Tressell at Ohio State and for three different teams in the NFL. That's a solid resume. On the other hand, his defense's numbers were pretty poor. The NFL is difficult to read, though, because so much of a team's success if based on the talent, which the coordinator really has nothing to do with. Unfortunately, we made this argument with Grantham and Schottenheimer, too.
We may see a situation like we had with Richt and Neil Callaway, where Callaway coordinated a lot of the day to day aspects of the offense but it was still Richt's offense. I still expect the defense to very much be Kirby's brainchild.
