Houston County’s Jake Fromm named to Elite 11

Jake Fromm didn’t go through a normal spring football practice period.

He was busy helping Houston County’s baseball team win the GHSA Class AAAAA title, so if he wasn’t as sharp as normal entering the Elite 11 quarterback competition in Los Angeles, it was to be expected.

The Georgia commitment found his groove soon enough, however, and he was named as one of the Elite 11 national quarterbacks following workouts Friday-Sunday at Redondo Union High School.

Fromm will now compete at the Elite 11 “The Opening” national finals July 6-10 at Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

Fromm made the finals from a field that started out with more than 700 quarterbacks and was whittled down to 12.

What Fromm learned in a few days in California will find its way onto the practice field at Houston County this summer.

“It was just a little bit of everything (about) the next level,” Houston County head coach Von Lassiter said. “You got a good taste of a college football system offensively. The only thing he’s been exposed to is what we do here and some of the stuff he’s been around at Georgia.

“They dove into an offensive playbook that was different than what we do, more of a pro-style deal. He was excited about it. He learned some things he wanted to share with me, and I was eager to hear it.”

Fromm joins quarterbacks committed to Oklahoma, Stanford, Michigan, Clemson, LSU, Texas, Penn State, Syracuse and Alabama.

Former NFL quarterback and 1997 Super Bowl winner Trent Dilfer works the camp and has a vote on who advances, and he talked to Luke Stampini of 247Sports.com.

“I enjoyed my time with Jake,” Dilfer said Sunday. “He had a struggle (Saturday) morning that he had to overcome. He came in a little out of shape. He was playing baseball, some things are understandable. He bounced back (Saturday) night. I was pretty impressed with him.”

Fromm is the latest Georgia quarterback to makeit to the finals, joining Jacob Eason (2015), Jacob Park (2013), Aaron Murray (2008), Logan Gray (2006), Matthew Stafford (2005), Joe Cox (2004) and D.J. Shockley (2000).

The Elite 11 staff ranked Fromm sixth out of 25 competitors after the first day and seventh after two. The 247sports website ranked him as having the 10th-best weekend.

In 13 games as a junior, Fromm threw for 4,099 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. In three years at Houston County, Fromm has totaled 8,835 yards and 75 touchdowns, ranking fourth and 13th, respectively, on the state of Georgia’s all-time list.

“You get guys — I would put Chase Daniel in his group — I would put Drew Brees to a certain degree,” Dilfer told Stampini. “Guys who are just natural passers, throwing is easy. (Fromm) knows how to change speed on the ball. He is a big, thick kid that gives you a lot to work with. He’s prepared for that physical part of it.”

Lassiter said he is anxious to see Fromm show mentally and physically what he learned in such a short time.

“There were a lot of things thrown at him,” Lassiter said. “A lot of information thrown at them, a lot of stuff mentally and physically they had to go through that I think made him a better quarterback.”
