There are many variants of the spread now. Some rely on an athletic QB true enough, such as Urban Meyer's particular take on it. Hell even Richt kind of did this before others at FSU with Charlie Ward. But the original spread pioneers like Price, Tiller and of course Erickson relied in a QB that can read defenses quickly. This one back offense is probably best displayed by Price's '97 Washington State team led by Ryan Leaf. Leaf was never a threat to run but man did he rack up the passing numbers. And the offense was pretty productive as a unit. PAC-10 champ, 42 points per game and over 500 yards of offense per game.
