More Trump reflections....

It's been 2 weeks since the election, and I've been in shock that Trump won. In 2012, I thought a lot of Republicans were in a bubble and that's why they were surprised that they lost. Remember the Karl Rove meltdown on Fox that year?

Well, this year there was a bubble, but it wasn't on the Republican side. It was the polls themselves. We had all these polls telling us what we wanted to hear. But the polls were wrong. The joke was on us, those of us who were never-Trumper Republicans (like me) or who were pro-Hillary Dems.

Trump obviously did tap into some general frustration in the upper-Midwest swing states. And I don't think it's right for those on the left to just assume it was a bunch of racists. Hillary's comment about "half" of Trump supporters being deplorable really showed a lack of empathy and an unwillingness to engage with a large sub-segment of the population and hear what was bothering them. There are real economic concerns out there, concerns with factory jobs drying up, with jobs being taken by illegals, and on and on.

I personally hate that he was elected, because I don't think he's the guy to actually address the concerns of the people he claims to speak for. I think he has conned the people that voted for him. However, there's nothing to do at this point but accept it and move on. I'm not gonna take to the streets and protest. I've got a job and a family to support, and I don't have time to act like he wasn't legitimately elected.

I do think that the next four years will be a very dark time for this country. If what we saw during the campaign is any indication of the kind of president he will be, I think the average person will be shocked at the level of corruption and grift that will be unleashed on this country by our president. I'm also extremely worried about what he will do on the international stage, and how he will deal with things like Iraq, Syria, NATO, Russia. At home, he's shown himself to be a petty and divisive figure. Is he actually capable of trying to govern for all Americans and not just himself, his buddies, and his business interests? I'm truly worried about where he will take America. I hope my instincts here are very wrong.
