That Cotton Bowl was a great game
especially if you like defense. That still ranks as one of the hardest hitting games I've ever seen, if not the hardest. That Texas defense was ferocious, and our guys matched them stick for stick. Seemed like every play the pops would echo off the stadium.
1983 was also the year everything changed in College Football. Before that, none of the Florida schools had ever made much of a ripple. Then they up and hand Miami the MNC because Nebraska missed a 2pt conversion. But Miami wasn't that good that year. Florida beat the ever living snot out of them, then they played two fistfuls of nobody's before meeting Nebraska on their home field in the bowl game. Miami shouldn't even have been in the top 5. The top 3 teams plainly and clearly were Texas, Auburn, and us. All 3 had only 1 loss - to each other (Texas beat Auburn in their home opener, Auburn beat us, then we beat Texas in the Bowl), and both us and Auburn beat Florida (who had beaten the ever living snot out of Miami).
