They were 10-2 in the regular season the year before, with both losses being on the road by 2 points to ranked teams (Clemson & Stanford). Kelly is much more of a known quantity than is Kirby. He's had 9, 10 and 12 win seasons. At ND, he's had big wins over teams like Southern Cal, Texas, Michigan, LSU, Utah (10-2, ranked that year), Arizona St (10-2, ranked that year) Michigan St, Stanford, Oklahoma, Temple (10-2, ranked that year), Miami, and Georgia Tech (who we lost to last year). Over that same time frame, we've had as many high-profile face-plants as notable wins.

So it's reasonable for them to believe Kelly is more likely to turn it around than is Kirby. And to be honest, if the names were changed, I couldn't argue.

But of course, the names are what they are, and personally I think we should absolutely blast Notre Dame. We out-class them at just about every position on the field, and we should be pretty darned angry after last year. Not many better folks to take it out on.
