But I don't think it was because they "could not run" as you said.

I just think that once they adjusted to Venables' junk defense, they realized they could still throw at will, so that's what they did. If they had decided to run the ball, they would have run all over Clemson's defense as well. But they started having success passing, so they stuck with it.
