The difference between Mark Richt and Kirby Smart (from a Richt fan).......
We all have different perceptions. It's how we view the world. Whether it's politics, or Jacob Eason, we all perceive things in the framing of our view. CMR and CKS, as well.
My perception of our past coach, and our previous coach, are based on a long history, and a short history. So while there was 15 years as a body of work for Richt, and less than 1 year for Smart, I've seen some different things between them.
Mark Richt is a good coach. I started to add "and a good person", however that has nothing to do with his job performance. Richt was a player's coach. He didn't bad-mouth players in the press. It was rare that he would ever criticize individuals in public. Richt would take the bullet for his team by deflecting criticism for poor performances. It was time for him to go, however.
Richt was burned out. His handling of Faton Bauta was the "thumb-the-nose-at-the-critics" moment, when he had had enough, and said, "You want a different QB? HERE'S your different QB. Now tell me who knows more." He played him the entire game to show them who was boss. He knew then that he was out. (IMO) Yet he had a nervous moment after the Tech game, with his trip to WA for breakfast with Eason, for UGA had won additional games after the UF loss. Just in case.
It was time to go.
Kirby Smart's brand of football is one of black-and-white. Old school. Not only did he learn from Saban, he learned just as much, if not more, from Smart's father. Where Richt was generous with his praise of his team, Smart withholds it, publicly. While Richt would get after his players during practice, he never did in public. I don't think Smart will hesitate to use whatever he can to make sure a player, or players, know how unhappy he is with them. If they're a little embarrassed, maybe they'll stop whatever they've been doing.
That's how I grew up with football, both playing and coaching. Kirby Smart is never satisfied. And I'm glad to see it, hear it, and feel it.
I like what he's doing.
