And average defense, particularly on DL. We had a pretty good secondary, and an outstanding LB corp with Mitch Davis, Charlie Clemmons, Randal Godfrey, Carlo Butler, Mo Harrell, etc. But we lost several standout defensive linemen for various reasons, who should have returned from the year before. Guys like Curt Douglas, George Brewer, Tracy Huzzie, Willie Jennings, and I think there were 3 or 4 others. In both losses that year (to ufk & Fla by a combined 5 points) the other team had late drives to win where we couldn't stop them on multiple 3rd and even 4th downs. Our DL was just gassed and couldn't get any pressure. I've always felt that just a couple of the guys above would have made a difference in both games. We actually tied Fla for co-champs in the East and either game would have put us in the SEC-C against that great Bama team.
