Son of long-time Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer, the 38-year-old assistant is a 12-year veteran of the college ranks, holding on-field jobs at Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Beamer has coached running backs, cornerbacks, safeties, and outside linebackers while also coordinating special teams and recruiting efforts.

Dawgs247 reported on Sunday that Beamer was under consideration for a job at Georgia, as he and Smart have a strong bond off the field. The hire leaves Smart with one more position to hire. Whoever is named to that position will likely hold the title of defensive coordinator.
