Re: I agree with what you say and
You can watch the entire game in a half hour at the link below - even less time if you fast forward past Nichols' offensive possessions. Where do they stunt or twist?
Seriously, if any single thing they did scheme-wise caused confusion with our offense, we need to get rid of every single person involved with our offense, because they have no business whatsoever being in the SEC. Remember this is a mid-pack Southland Conference team we're talking about. Half the Southland evidently weren't confused by what they did. Sheesh.
No, our problem was our execution & decision making on offense:
-On our 3rd possession, Chigbu dropped a pass that would have put us 1st & goal inside the 5. 2 plays later Ham missed a long FG.
-1st drive of the 2nd qtr, we drove 80+ yards from our own 5. After a completion to Chigbu to their 13, we decide to get cute and run the “wild dawg” with Godwin. He fakes to Chubb and keeps. Had he handed it off, Chubb moonwalks into the end zone. 2 plays later Ham kicks a 25 yd FG.
-With 2 min left in the half, Chubb fumbles and they get a cheap TD.
-Our 1st drive of the 2nd half (after iMac’s big punt return) 2nd & 5 at the 9, we run a fake end around pass. Had Eason just given it to iMac, he backstrokes into the endzone, but he throws incomplete to Payne, when Blazevich was uncovered in the endzone. After a high throw to Chigbu, we kick another FG.
At this point, we should be cruising up 28-0, but instead we’re only 13-7. Nichols’ ensuing possession was their only real drive of the entire game, which included a 4th down conversion, and they took the lead 14-13.
Then after Lorenzo’s scoop & score, we should have just kicked the PAT, but to make matters worse, we ran a QB draw for the 2-pt play? Seriously? wtf?
Dumb decisions, bad execution, bad coaching all combined to let a mid-pack FCS team hang around and nearly pull the upset. Had nothing to do with their defense.
